A world-famous Anishinaabe musician returns to the reserve to rest and refresh herself, but finds that her fame and the outside world intrude.

Grappling with the paralyzing effects of capitalization and colonialism, Ember finds herself struggling with her responsibility to the next seven generations. Raging against confinement and dispossession she finds her uncompromising power within societal imbalance. Poisoning the ever-hungry belly of corporatization, she explores themes of righteousness, balance, and ethics. Symbolizing the imperfections of society and Indigenous resistance, this poetic reflection of fractured identity and posture is shot in one take on 8mm film.
Our screening venue is located in the south parking lot of the Town of Whitby municipal building, located at 575 Rossland Rd E. in Whitby.

Shifting the Narrative is a curated drive-in screening series focused on Canadian identity in storytelling and culture. We have bridged the gap between experienced and emerging filmmakers by selecting five dynamic filmmakers that have made a mark nationwide (British Columbia to Nova Scotia) through their feature films. Each feature filmmaker selected by DRIFF added to our program by selecting a short film by an emerging filmmaker to screen prior to the feature presentation.
Our group of filmmakers worked with our team to curate an incredible program of stories that touch upon migration and deportation, losing yourself and finding your voice, strength in pride, and pride from strength.
